NCHA- Annual report 2008-2009

This brief, set by Purple Circle, wanted us to design an Annual Report for a Homeless Housing company named the NCHA ( Nottingham Council Housing Association) However they didn't want the usual boring ways of a normal annual report.  It had to be innovated and different from the norm.  

I decided that I would create a 3D annual report with the information displayed on the 3D model.  I designed a net of a box that unfolds to create a house, idea taken from the fact that this company help the homeless to find homes. Taking the information from www.ncha.org.uk here are images of what I designed and created using, photoshop, illustrator, indesign.  I created a pack that would be sent to the customer with a covering letter explaining how to create the box and home and how to read it.

'A Power Smile!' Energy Conservation

Audience : Office workers, large business places

Message : 'Cut Out' standby! TURN OFF!

Format : Direct mail, Poster & Billboard

I wanted to create a fun way of turning off appliances left on in large office spaces.

I came up with the idea of a 'Power Smile.' Using the power button symbol I changed it into a face.  The receiver of the direct mail would literally 'cut out' the reminder and place it on the corner of the appliance using the instructions provided.  Simple & fun that would look cool in an office environment.

Editorial illustration - Super Vision

This was an illustration brief for any editorial magazine.  As I chose a topic that was scientific, I decided to use The New Scientist Magazine.  We had to design a front cover and a double page spread.  Text was supplied to us in the brief and we 

had to draw what was said in the article.  My idea is linked very well as I wanted to create an image that was like using inferred images.  This is why I chose black and had vibrant colours for the goggles.  The lines at the side are radio waves and these where created using a digital camera on 50 ISO and a torch in a black room. I overlaid the images on photoshop and produced in InDesign.

Visual Language of Typography Book

A book about the visual language of typography.  Type has a personality and is chosen to match the meaning of the vernacular; Everyday's chosen words.  B.A.L.D  (book layout and design).  Designing the front and back cover, contents, and 3 page spreads.  I produced an introduction, historical type and Sci-fi typography section of the book and printed onto yellow paper as scientific research shows that black looks best on yellow.  As changing the colour of the type can alter the personality of it.

New Self Logo

I decided for a change in Logo, I used typography symbols [;] to create my initials MJW.  Used front Gendouki-Regular.  It looks like a M on top a J in the middle and a W on the bottom.  Could be a proposal for a logo for my self promotion work this year.

I am getting really interested in fonts and appreciate why fonts are used for certain things, such as M&S which looks quite elegant and fancy whereas JD looks quite flexible and sporty.  Many people don's appreciate type as they should, its important and is around us in our everyday life! 

 

NTU Cycling logo

Was asked to design a logo for Nottingham Trent University cycling club.  Here is the design process work and some final images of the logo in which they can use.  I thought of a stamp idea.  I thought that "cycling" if you turned the y upside down it creates a bike with the two "c's" next to it.  Then decided to use a circle and place ntu cycling club around the outside as it looks like a tyre with groves around the outside.  Hopefully they will use it.

These designs are for my final major project for my level 1 at NTU.  I wanted to promote Shakespeare's plays to make a younger/ teenagers view more shows.  I decided that a travel theatre would be an easier way to make a younger audience view these plays as not many actually go to the theatre.  I produced a logo, a leaflet, posters and the tickets of three of Shakespeare's plays.  Used mark-making, illustration techniques, Photography, Illustrator and Photoshop.
